| Ethics |
Set of moral values principles or values to guide behaviour in certain contexts. The Social Research Association (www.the-sra.org.uk) issues a set of ethical guidelines for conducting social research. |
| Ethnography |
A qualitative research method involving interview and observation aimed at describing the culture of a group. The researchers will generally immerse themselves in the lives of their research subjects for an extended period of time. |
| Evaluation research |
Research that is concerned with the evaluation of real-life interventions in the social world. |
| Evidence |
Is the information that supports or substantiates research findings. |
| Evidence-Informed Practice |
Is practice informed by practice wisdom, service user experience, and research evidence. |
| Experiment |
A test under controlled conditions, made to demonstrate a known truth, examine the validity of a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy of something previously untried. It should possess internal validity in that it has at least an experimental group, which is exposed to the treatment (Intervention) and a control group, which is not. (Random assignment to groups.) |
| External validity |
A concern with whether the results of the study can be generalised to the whole population (or group) being studied. |
