Term Definition
Mean

The average value for a set of data calculated by dividing the total of values by the number of values.

Measure of central tendency

A statistic like the mean, mode or median that summarises a distribution of values.

Median

The middle value for a set of data. The point at which 50% of the data points fall below and 50% above the value.

Meta-analysis

A method of determining the overall effect of the relationships between variables by drawing together the findings from one or more research studies.

Methodology

How the research is to be carried out, including the research design, sampling and measurement. A method should be selected which will deliver the type of data required.

Mixed methods approach

When a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods is used in the same project.

Mode

The most frequently occurring value for a set of data.

Moderator

The person who guides the discussion in a focus group.
