Term Definition

The information that is collected from research, usually in the form of numbers or words. Data can also collected through observation.

Dependent variable

The condition or behaviour which may change due to an intervention or treatment (the independent variable).

Descriptive research

Research which describes the characteristics of the issue and the characteristics of those affected by the issue.

Descriptive statistics

Procedures used to describe data sets. These often include frequency count, the mean, median and mode and the standard deviation.

Distribution of values

A term used to refer to the entire data relating to the variable. Thus, the ages of members of a sample represent the distribution of values for that variable for the sample.

Double blind

Research study where neither the researcher nor the participant knows to which group a participant is assigned.
